Chile: Authorities convene on four-way joint video streaming plan

 |  April 15, 2014

Chilean regulators are discussing a proposed joint venture between the nation’s top four broadcasters to determine whether the deal is in line with antitrust law, according to the National Economic Prosecutor.

The Prosecutor announced it is consulting with the Competition Tribunal to examine the joint venture, planned between Canal 13, Megavision, TVN and Chilevision, which all plan to create an over the top video distribution platform.

According to regulators, an initial look into the venture has resulted in evidence that all four companies could soon become part of the platform, despite assurance by the firms that only Canal 13 and Megavision are involved in the project at this stage. Authorities are now probing whether the project would negatively impact the online video distribution market and allow the companies to raise prices charged to viewers.
