Chile: Steps for compensation in ‘Comfort Cartel’ laid out

While it is not yet known when the compensation will be delivered in the so-called ‘Comfort Cartel’ case that has rocked South America’s tissue paper market, but details of the mechanism have now been revealed. The main perpetrator, paper company CMPC, will pay a total of US$150 million dollars, which would be distributed among all Chileans over 18 years of age at the rate of $7,000 Chilean pesos per person. The money is currently held in a deposit account- owned by the paper company – in state bank BancoEstado.

    The problem with setting a date is caused by an appeal filed by Mapuche comuneros and the Chilean Consumers’ Association (Asocochi), against the agreement reached by the National Corporation of Consumers and Users (Conadecus), Sernac and CMPC, regarding the terms of compensation.

    Regarding the deadline, officials indicated that this could continue to be delayed, since those who filed the petition – should they get a refusal – could take their complaints on to the Supreme Court.
