China: A new infant formula scandal? Foreign manufacturers probed for price-fixing

Five manufacturers of infant milk formula are under watch from regulators within China for allegations of anticompetitive behavior, reported the Beijing Times. Nestle, Abbott Laboratories, Mead Johnson Nutrition, Danone’s Dumex and Wyeth Nutrition were all named in reports as firms under investigation by the National Development and Reform Commission for allegations of price-fixing; all companies responded to request for comment by assuring full cooperation with authorities. According to reports, up to half of China’s infant formula sales are of foreign brands following the nation’s 2008 tainted formula scandal that ended in six child deaths.
