China: Economic overhauls may give NDRC more antitrust powers

 |  March 3, 2014

As the government looks to overhaul the National Development and Reform Commission, sources told reporters that new policies could strengthen the NDRC’s role as competition watchdog.

The economic planner is set to present suggested overhauls this week and, while the authority has not revealed details, sources say the NDRC is planning to boost its antitrust staff.

According to reports, the restructuring plans will be discussed Wednesday at the annual National People’s Congress session.

The overhauls would follow recent vows by Chinese regulators to crack down on price-fixing and other anticompetitive behavior. The NDRC has recently taken aim at US technology conglomerates Qualcomm and InterDigital for competition concerns.
