China’s cyberspace regulator has dealt a harsh blow to Tencent Holdings, imposing a one million yuan ($137,390.95) fine for hosting illegal and pornographic information. Tencent QQ’s security center released a statement accepting the penalty and vowed to take corrective measures.
Wang Shengjun, China’s internet security official, was quick to condemn the actions, saying: “With the development of the internet, it is important to regulate and protect the online environment.”

The Tencent QQ statement said: “We understand the importance of our social responsibilities and will carry out comprehensive supervision and strict management. We will actively cooperate with the supervision and administration of the authorities.”
The incident highlights the growing need for greater control over China’s internet and Tencent QQ’s apparent commitment to improved security reflects the industry’s desire for a safer online experience for its users.
