China Watchdog Fines Tencent

China’s cyberspace regulator has dealt a harsh blow to Tencent Holdings, imposing a one million yuan ($137,390.95) fine for hosting illegal and pornographic information. Tencent QQ’s security center released a statement accepting the penalty and vowed to take corrective measures.

Wang Shengjun, China’s internet security official, was quick to condemn the actions, saying: “With the development of the internet, it is important to regulate and protect the online environment.”

The Tencent QQ statement said: “We understand the importance of our social responsibilities and will carry out comprehensive supervision and strict management. We will actively cooperate with the supervision and administration of the authorities.”
