A government tender for wireless spectrum has officially opened, just one week after Spain-based Telefonica inked a deal to sell Telefonica Czech Republic to the richest man in the nation for $3.4 billion.
Telefonica Czech Republic, which is the nation’s largest wireless operator, will bid for the spectrum along with rivals T-Mobile Czech Republic, Vodafone Czech Republic, and two incoming companies.
The Czech Telecommunications Office announced the beginning of the auction on Monday; the regulator expects the five participants to finalize bidding by the end of the year.
The Telecommunications Office is looking to open the market, dominated by its three main players, to new competition; the spectrum winners will be required to hold it for seven years.
Officials are expecting to raise more than $430 million through the auction.
