Dominican Rep: Renewable energy sector calls out ‘shut-out’ from energy contract bids

 |  January 16, 2018

The National Committee to Combat Climate Change, CNLCC, protested the announcement made by Radhamés Del Carmen, general manager of Edesur Dominicana, of future tenders for four-year electric power contracts available exclusively for natural gas projects, therefore excluding renewable energies.

“An Electric Pact that does not have the power to force the CDEEE and the Superintendence of Electricity to guarantee the participation of renewable energies, and much less to prioritize them in tenders for the purchase of electricity, is the best evidence that this agreement does not respond to the Law of National Development Strategy No.1-12 “, said the environmentalist group.

“We accuse the Government and the Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies (CDEEE) of monopolistic practices against free competition by holding tenders that exclude renewable energies.” The group also argues that these bids, both previous ones for short-term contracts and those recently announced, favor the interests of big owners of fossil fuel power generators, to the detriment of the country acquiring cheap and clean electricity.
