E.U.: Regulator to study whether food retailers selling own-brands reduces competition

The European Commission has announced it will probe whether retailers who sell products under their own brand wield too much market power over suppliers of competing brand name goods. The study will focus on whether the increased use of own-brand or private-label products reduces consumer choice; the Commission expects to finish the report by the end of 2013. Commissioner Joaquin Almunia says the initiation of the study sprang from numerous complaints issued to the Commission over the issue.
