Egypt: Supermarket merger highlights need for stronger Competition Authority

Analysts are reportedly concerned over grocery giant Carrefour’s plans to acquire Metro Market and Khair Zaman supermarket chains, voicing fears that a new monopoly may emerge from the deals. President of the Egyptian Competition Authority Mona Al-Garf has said in a statement that the authority only learned of the deal through media reports and have yet to be filled-in on details; she also mentioned that the body is at present reviewing legislation that would allow the ECA to halt any mergers that pose a threat to Egypt’s competition. Al-Garf warned, however, that until that law is passed, the body has no power to prevent a merger such as the one planned by Carrefour.
