EU: Canon wins approval to expand business through merger with IRIS

The European Commission approved on Monday for the European arm of Japan’s Canon Inc. to buy IRIS, a document recognition company based in Belgium. According to reports, the Commission’s review of the merger mainly focused on the market for portable document scanners and whether the merger would decrease competition in the sector, but the authority found enough competition would remain. Canon reported that it was hoping to buy IRIS for about $93.5 million.
