EU: Chiquita, Fyffes offer compromise to Commission

Top banana producer Chiquita Brands and its Irish rival Fyffes have reportedly offered the European Commission a compromise to secure clearance for their $526 million merger.

The European Commission announced Tuesday that the companies submitted their proposals last week, but the watchdog did not offer details on what those concessions include.

The companies first agreed on a merger last March; reports say the combined company would hold 14 percent of the global banana market.
