EU: Commission builds confidence in telco market overhauls

A conference held in London on Tuesday provided a platform for the European Commission to expand upon its plans to overhaul Europe’s telecommunications sector and assure that lower prices for consumers is not the regulator’s only objective. Plans for carriers to share networks must benefit consumers not only in pricing, said antitrust telecoms unit head Eduardo Martinez Rivero, but also in quality. In addressing attendees of the Total Telecom Network Management Show, Martinez Rivero insisted that improvements in network infrastructure as well as the possibilities for new services must benefit both telecom companies and its consumers; further, the Commission will scrutinize in detail any deals between telecommunications networks that may impact competition.
