EU: Deadline set for Delta, Virgin airline ruling

The European Commission has set a date of June 20 to officially decide whether a proposed merger between Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic should be allow to take place. The deal would see a 49 percent acquisition of Virgin in a plan to better pit Delta against United Continental and American Airlines. The proposal was first introduced last December, but according to antitrust lawyers, the Commission may be most concerned with a potential lessening of competition between Delta and Virgin following the joint venture. Delta formally requested approval from the Commission for the acquisition on Wednesday.
