French telecommunications company Orange received a slight delay on Tuesday to its proposed takeover of Spanish telecommunications company Jazztel. The European Commission stated on January 14 that it had finished its probe into the deal and would now reach a decision on the $3.9 billion deal. On Tuesday, the EC moved its deadline from April 24, to April 30. A person familiar with the deal says that the EC has as many as 60 questions concerning the deal to which it requires answers.
The competition watchdog is concerned that the deal will lead to price increases and reduced competition for fixed internet access and fixed-mobile multiple play offers in Spain and rejected Orange’s previously offered concessions as being insufficient.
