EU: General Court backs Commission in cement cartel case

 |  March 17, 2014

The EU General Court has reportedly sided with the European Commission in rejecting an appeal of an earlier Commission ruling filed by various cement makers, say reports.

Several cement companies, including Holcim and Cemex, appealed the European Commission’s decision to launch an investigation into allegations of anticompetitive behavior, accusing the regulator of overstepping its boundaries in requesting information regarding the case.

Reports say the companies claimed the Commission did not offer a proper explanation nor a long enough timeframe for the companies to supply the requested information.

But the General Court has reportedly backed the Commission, dismissing the appeal upon finding that the authority provided the “minimum degree of clarity” required by law.

The Commission first launched its investigation into the cement industry in 2008.
