As the European Commission has yet to resolve its conflict with Russian gas giant Gazprom over dominance abuse allegations – a case complicated by ongoing unrest between Russia and Ukraine – Poland has reportedly suggested sweeping overhauls to confront the gas market power of Russia.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reportedly proposed the creation of a new authority that would handle gas supply cases for the European Union to take on Russia and reign-in the EU’s dependence on Russian gas.
“ A dominant supplier has the power to raise prices and reduce supply,” PM Tusk said in an interview with the Financial Times. ”The way to correct this market distortion is simple. Europe should confront Russia’s monopolistic position with a single European body charged with buying its gas.”
He continued by calling for that the EU to “undertake the lengthier task of breaking up the Russian gas monopoly and restoring free market competition.”
