EU: Liberty Global cable tie-up facing intense review

Sources say that Liberty Global’s planned merger with Netherlands-based Ziggo is set to face intense scrutiny by the European Commission due to the complexity of the deal.

According to reports, two sources said Friday that a phase two will be opened over the deal following its preliminary review, which is set to conclude May 8.

Liberty Global is reportedly pursuing the Dutch cable market as it looks to strengthen its presence in Europe; reports say its bid for Ziggo values the company at about $13.8 billion.
