EU: October deadline set for steel merger decision

The European Commission (EC) has set an October 26 deadline to decide on Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal’s acquisition of Italian steel plant Ilva.

    ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steelmaker and asked for EC approval of its acquisition on September 21. The regulator could approve of the deal without conditions or could possibly open a full investigation if it feels that competition concerns have not been addressed.

    Italian authorities have stated that they are in full support of the deal.
