EU: Telecom reform to tackle competition from Whatsapp and Skype

Reuters reported that the European Commission is looking at possible changes to Europe’s telecom rules in the year 2016, taking into account competition from cable operators and other services like Facebook Inc’s Whatsapp.

    The new rule changes are part of a strategy to form a digital and unanimous market and help create a more level playing ground in Europe. The move was welcomed by the telecom industry.

    The document available to by Reuters stated that operators had to fight for ‘over-the-top’ services ‘without being subject to the same regulatory regime’. It also added that it was important to create a “fair and future-proof regulatory environment for all services.”
