France: Dominance abuse crackdown zaps energy giant

As France’s competition regulators take harsher stances against anticompetitive behavior, reports say the nation’s antitrust regulator has fined electricity giant Electricite de France nearly $19 million for abusing its dominant position.

The authority announced its findings that EDF abused its market position in the way it signs residents up for solar services of its unit EDF Energies Nouvelles. The findings come following a 2009 complaint by a solar panel supplier.

EDF remained France’s energy monopoly until a 2007 liberalization of the market. The company remains dominant, however, say reports.
