Google’s Final Appeal in Ad Tech Antitrust Case Pushed to Late November

A U.S. federal court has rescheduled Alphabet-owned Google’s last opportunity to argue against the potential breakup of its advertising technology operations. The closing arguments, originally planned for Wednesday, will now take place on November 21, according to Reuters.

    The proceeding comes as U.S. District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema evaluates possible remedies after ruling in April that Google maintains two unlawful monopolies in the digital advertising technology sector. Her earlier decision found that the company’s dominance violated antitrust laws, setting the stage for a debate over how to reintroduce competition into the online ad marketplace.

    According to Reuters, the U.S. Department of Justice and a coalition of states are urging the court to require Google to divest its ad exchange, AdX. This platform, central to Google’s ad tech operations, charges online publishers a 20% fee to facilitate rapid-fire auctions that determine which ads appear when users load websites.

    The delayed hearing will give both sides additional time as the judge weighs whether structural changes—potentially including the sale of AdX—are necessary to address what the government describes as entrenched monopoly power in digital advertising.
