India: CCI investigating alleged cement cartelization

The Competition Commission of India on Friday said that it is looking at the differentials in cement prices across the country to ascertain if there is any cartel behaviour.

“Prices have again been moving up over the past few months in certain regions,” acknowledged CCI chairman Ashok Chawla.

In Chennai, a bag of cement costs Rs 400, which is more than 50% the cost in other parts of the country. The construction industry has complained to CCI that distributors are holding back stock and selling at a higher price.
