Ireland: Record $18B airline purchase signals Ryanair has abandoned takeover deal

Just weeks after the European Commission blocked, for the second time, Ryanair’s proposed takeover of rival Aer Lingus, the economy airliner has reportedly entered into discussions with Boeing to buy more than $18 billion worth of Boeing jets. The deal would mark one of the largest aircraft purchases ever and will require approval from both Taoiseach Enda Kenny as well as US President Barack Obama. Boeing, based in Seattle, would see its largest sale if the deal is approved. According to reports, the development is a strong indicator that Ryanair has finally abandoned its quest to buy out its rival Aer Lingus
