Italy: Telecom, Hutchinson merger put on hold

Talks surrounding a merger between Telecom Italia and Hutchinson Whampoa’s Italian assets have been put on hold, according to four sources, over pricing disagreements. Telecom Italia first agreed to talks to acquire Hutchinson’s H3G business last April, though sources said the company would likely postpone negotiations; according to reports, the suspension of the merger would likely mean a missed opportunity to consolidate the market, described as ‘overcrowded’ in the media. Telecom Italia is currently looking to sell its fixed-line services.
