Italy: Telecom Italia mulls merger options with rivals

Sources say Telecom Italia SpA’s board will evaluate potential merger options in its meeting next week, specifically concerning a buyout of H3G SpA, Itlay’s smallest carrier. H3G is the wireless unit of Hutchinson Whampoa Ltd.; reports say it could be valued at about $1.9 billion. The source did note, however, that Telecom Italia is not looking to pay cash for any potential acquisitions, and that offering stock may not be in the investors’ best interests. There are four wireless carriers in Italy’s market, and on analysts said that a consolidation from four to three competitors would “create value for all remaining operators.”
