Italy: Watchdog expects to force strict rules on Metroweb buyout

As Telecom Italia looks to acquire fiber-optic network operator Metroweb, reports say competition authorities in the nation expect strict rules to be imposed on the deal.

The head of Italy’s antitrust regulator AGCM, Chairman Givanni Pitruzzella, said Tuesday that Telecom Italia will need to adhere to stringent conditions to move forward with the acquisition. Telecom Italia, which was once a phone monopoly, first announced last week that it submitted a bid to acquire a controlling stake in Metroweb.

Financial details of that bid were not reported.

The takeover would allow Telecom Italia to accelerate its investment in infrastructure, say reports.
