Jamaica: Sugarcane marketing practices earn sour reception

Authorities in Jamaica are reportedly poised to examine certain marketing practices used by sugarcane companies in efforts to push sales of prepackaged sugar.

The Fair Trading Commission will investigate Jamaica Cane Product Sales and its efforts to sell Jamaica Gold sugar products. While the competition watchdog said that it had not received complaints against the company, local media had reported that retailers were unhappy with JCPS’s encouragement that they order bulk supplies of Jamaica Gold.

JCPS denies any wrongdoing and said that it had merely used a promotion in efforts to boost sales of the product.

The FTC confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the matter based on those news reports.

JCPS is one of the two companies allowed to market Jamaican sugar and holds the top spot for sugar supplies in the state, according to reports.
