Japan: Kawasaki’s heavy machinery merger faces strong internal resistance

Three sources have informed the media that heavy machinery giants Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co Ltd have made advancements towards a possible merger. The deal, however, may face roadblocks as the companies, both based in Japan, are fighting internal battles; according to one of the sources, disagreement within Mitsui’s management could make it difficult for an agreement to be reached between the two parties, and those already opposing the merger will likely be difficult to sway. Regardless, the parties are reportedly already seeking financial advisors to help with the deal, though nothing formal has been established beyond that.
