Jones Day Expands German Antitrust Practice with Senior Munich Hire

Global law firm Jones Day has strengthened its presence in Germany with the arrival of competition law attorney Sarah Blazek, who has joined the firm’s Munich office. The firm announced the move in a recent statement, highlighting Blazek’s extensive experience in German and European Union antitrust matters, state aid and subsidies, and foreign direct investment (FDI) regulation.

    Blazek’s practice spans the full range of competition law, with a focus on advising clients in regulated sectors and guiding major transactions and projects. According to a statement from the firm, her recent experience includes work on significant matters involving Northvolt, Japan Pulp & Paper and Condor. She is also active in matters involving the EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation and represents clients before German competition authorities, the European Commission and the European courts.

    The firm indicated that Blazek will play a key role in its pan-European competition practice and will maintain a regular presence in Brussels, reflecting the cross-border nature of her work and the firm’s integrated European platform.

    Blazek joins Jones Day’s global Antitrust & Competition Law Practice, which includes lawyers across the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Per a statement from the firm, the practice advises on a broad spectrum of EU and national competition issues, including merger control, cartel investigations, abuse of dominance cases, state aid matters, private damages claims, and foreign investment screening. The team is structured to handle multi-jurisdictional investigations and transactions, combining regulatory knowledge with commercially focused guidance.

    Alexandre Verheyden, co-leader of Jones Day’s Antitrust & Competition Law Practice, emphasized the strategic importance of the German market. “Sarah is a great addition to the Firm and makes our German and European competition practice even stronger across the board,” he said in a statement. “Germany is host to some of the EU’s largest manufacturing companies and a strong bench of German qualified competition partners is an important part of the Firm’s continued growth throughout Europe.”
