Latin America: Countries form alliance for antitrust cooperation

Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico have agreed to form a strategic alliance to cooperate on investigations, bring more antitrust actions and advance a common agenda, the top investigator for the Mexican competition authority announced today.

“Regional cooperation is key and we should do more in our jurisdictions,” Carlos Mena Labarthe, head of the investigatory unit of the Federal Economic Competition Commission of Mexico, or Cofece, said at a conference in Washington*.

The group will also invite Colombia and Peru to participate in more formal cooperation, Mena said.

The countries will discuss “what are the issues in the region we can address together,” Mena said. They will look at structural issues to be tackled and seek to bring new cases.

The countries will meet once a year, and the first meeting will take place in Mexico City on the sidelines of an American Bar Association event in June.
