Mexico: Aeroméxico and Volaris accused of monopolistic activity

 |  January 21, 2018

Last week, Aeroméxico and Volaris were notified by Mexico’s Federal Commission of Economic Competition (Cofece) of a Probable Liability Report related to an investigation into a possible monopolistic practice. The companies are accused of colluding to control airfares in the Mexican market.

In April 2015, in a press release, Alejandra Palacios informed of an investigation into a “possible realization of absolute monopolistic practices in the market of services to the public of air transport of passengers and / or cargo with origin and / or destination in the national territory “.

According to sources from the antitrust body, on December 7, Cofece discussed the matter, whose resolution was to continue with this process after concluding the investigation phase due to the probable monopolistic practice. The companies face penalties of up to 10% of their annual turnover.
