Mexico: AT&T and Telcel secure AWS frequency licenses

Mexico’s telecommunications regulator IFETEL has announced it has granted concession licenses to AT&T, the US based telephone behemoth, and to América Móvil’s Telcel mobile operator, which will allow them to use and exploit broadcasting frequencies between 1710-1780 MHz and 2110-2180 MHz, also known as the AWS band.

    “Both companies, which have separately won the rights through public contest, have assured the Institute of their compliance with payment of transmission fees offered to them in exchange of the specified frequencies for the period indicated” said the regulator.

    IFETEL has pointed out that in both cases the licenses are to be tied to other habilitation concessions, allowing the holders to use these to offer commercial services which they are already authorized to perform, such as mobile communication.
