Mexico: COFECE speaks out against tariffs and barriers

Mexican competition authority COFECE has ruled on the government’s trade policies, proposing an adjustment to “eliminate or reduce” a series of tariffs that have lead to price increases for consumers.

Among the proposals presented by the competition regulator are the elimination of sectoral promotion programs, as well as existing tariffs on steel products, textiles and footwear, measures supposedly intended to support domestic industry. The agency also issued a number of timely recommendations on ‘anti-dumping’ mechanisms and other measures that it believes should be reviewed.

“The positive impact of international trade can be overshadowed by the effect of certain trade barriers, limiting the entry of goods and services from abroad and generating incentives for the inefficiency of domestic companies …” said the agency.
