Mexico: COFECE to focus on transport sector

 |  October 18, 2016

Mexico’s competition regulator, the Federal Commission for Economic Competition (COFECE) has announced it will focus its priorities on performing a careful study of the country’s transportation sector, hoping to develop recommendations and practices which will prevent the formation of monopolies, and to create a safer environment for possible investors.

Carlos Mena, head of the agency’s investigations unit, explained that the transport industry in Mexico “is a sector with very significant impact, as it affects virtually every sector of the economy, touching on every supply chain and therefore the prices of nearly every single good and service on the market.”

Due to the sector’s strategic importance, the COFECE will follow closely the development of these industries. “We have followed a few internal criteria, which have helped us decide which industries will be a priority, and looking for example at economic growth: Those sectors which contribute the most to the country’s GDP.”
