Mexico: Congressmen agree to cut IFT powers

 |  May 2, 2017

Mexico’s lower house of Congress has passed a motion to reform the Federal Telecommunications Law. The proposed changes have been criticized for limiting the powers and abilities of the Federal Telecommunications Institute and reducing the rights of the public.

The reform eliminates concessionaries obligations to adjust their codes of ethics to IFT guidelines. It also establishes that public defenders of audience rights will be appointed by the same concessionaires, with no input from the IFT.

The IFT will no longer be able to suspend broadcasting of news programs that violate the norms related to the protection of children, among other changes that seek to strengthen the role of each company’s internal code of ethics.
