Netherlands: KPN says America Movil deal not doomed

The head of Netherlands-based telco operator KPN told reporters Thursday that despite merger talk breakdowns, a deal could still be struck with Carlos Slim’s America Movil.

Reports announced earlier this week that the nearly $10 billion buyout of KPN – part of Slim’s efforts to enter the EU telecom market – failed after the two parties could not reach an agreement.

Following the news, however, KPN said America Movil retracted its offer for the company and that the company could return with a new offer. In a conference call, KPN said the two parties could “be sitting around the table again.”

Speculation is rising, however, that Slim could turn his attention to central Europe as talks for Telekom Austria, in which America Movil has a stake, rose.
