New Zealand: Formal probe eyes Aussie supermarkets

New Zealand has launched a formal investigation into Australian supermarket chain Countdown, say reports, following allegations the company is acting anticompetitively against New Zealand grocers.

    Reports say the probe heightens tension between New Zealand and Australia regarding supplier practices. New Zealand suppliers allege Australian supermarkets are excluding them from having their products in Australian supermarkets.

    Now, New Zealand’s Commerce Commission is offering confidentiality protection to anyone who comes forward with information regarding the claims. The regulator said it expects the probe to last several months.
