New Zealand: Gov eyes Steam after gaming platform’s owner fined

 |  January 5, 2017

The country’s competition watchdog says it is looking into complaints about popular online gaming platform Steam, which has just been hit with a big fine in Australia.

United States’ Valve Corporation, which owns Steam, was fined A$3 million (NZ$3.1m) last month by Australia’s Federal Court for disregarding consumer rights relating to customer refunds.

Steam, which has more than 2 million customers in Australia, broke Australian law by stating on its website that customers were not entitled to refunds.

A spokesman for New Zealand’s Commerce Commission said it wrote to Valve two years ago at about the same time that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission brought its lawsuit against the company.
