Paraguay: ‘There is no fuel monopoly’

Paraguay’s ministry for Industry and Commerce assured the press that there is no evidence for a monopoly operating in the fuel market, thus rejecting an appeal by the firm Petrobras Paraguay.

MIC’s Director for Legal Affairs, Juan Vicente Talavera, declared that there are no ‘partial or total’ monopolies in Paraguay’s gasoline market controlled by Petropar, the state oil company.

The Director dismissed the idea stating “There is no monopoly when you have several agents.” However, he implied that there may be a certain level of oligopoly in the sector.
