Philippines: President urged to mark new competition bill as ‘urgent’

 |  March 24, 2014

A lawmaker is urging the Philippines to mark proposed antitrust laws as urgent to fast-track its passage, say reports.

Valenzuela City Representative Sherwin Gatchalian is encouraging President Benigno Aquino III to certify the bill as urgent on the grounds that dominant players in the utilities and telco industries need to be reigned-in immediately.

The legislation, the lawmaker said, would also facilitate foreign investment.

”Cronies, cartels and monopolies still exist even after the Martial Law years,” Gatchalian said. “I call on President Aquino to make the bill a priority to ensure its passage in both Houses.”
