Poland: Nation seeks a voice in EC competition powers

Poland is reportedly vying to get one of its own into the European Commission as it looks to strengthen its influence among EU competition policy.

The nation’s foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski is seen as Poland’s top candidate to become the next EU foreign policy chief, though he was described as a “natural candidate” for the Commission’s head of diplomacy.

But Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented last week that other positions in the Commission could serve Poland greatly; government officials are reportedly eyeing positions with the Commission’s competition enforcement arm. Reports say energy regulation within the Commission is also considered by Poland.

PM Tusk spoke late last week at a press conference during which he stated that Poland has built up “such significant influence” within EU foreign policy. Efforts to have Sikorski enter the Commission would only reinforce that influence, say reports.
