Portugal: Vodafone to buy Optimus’ fiber network

 |  May 17, 2016

Vodafone Portugal has announced it will purchase the entire optic fiber network currently owned by local rival Optimus. Thus, Optimus will finally fulfil the obligations imposed on it by Portugal’s Competition Authority before approving their recent merger with smaller rival Zon, which was announced in February.

“Vodafone has acted on our option to purchase Optimus’ FTTH network, located within the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas.” The purchase will not affect the number of Vodafone’s customers, as the 200,000 homes included in the agreement would have already been covered by some Vodafone services.

Vodafone has announced a further cooperation agreement with MEO, whereby both companies will aim to extend the fiber network to over 900,000 homes, increasing Vodafone’s reach to over 550,000 homes.
