Korolyov, 45, brings two decades of regulatory experience to the post. He joined the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) in 2005 and rose to the position of deputy chief in 2015, according to a statement from the Kremlin. His background in overseeing market competition and corporate regulation suggests that economic management and industrial oversight could feature prominently in his regional agenda.

In a late-night meeting with the president, Korolyov outlined his immediate priorities, including preparing the region’s infrastructure for winter, supporting families of soldiers engaged in the war in Ukraine, and advancing the development of a high-speed highway passing through Tver. “My main priority will of course be improving people’s quality of life,” he told Putin.

Located northwest of Moscow, the Tver region has long been regarded as strategically significant due to its location between the Russian capital and St. Petersburg. It is also an important industrial center, with timber production and metal manufacturing among its key economic activities. Putin described Tver as “the very heart of Russian land that has issues which require extra attention and solutions,” per a statement summarizing the meeting.

Korolyov, a native of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia, will hold the acting governor position until the next scheduled gubernatorial election in September 2026.
