Saudi Arabia: Virgin Mobile enters telco market

 |  March 17, 2014

Virgin Mobile emerged as one of three wireless operators that were awarded mobile virtual network operating licenses in Saudi Arabia, reports say, as the UK telco is set to begin operations in the nation.

Saudi Arabia’s Communication and Information Technology Commission had previously ordered the current three mobile competitors to each host a license to boost competition. The winners of those licenses also include UK-based Lebara Group and Gulf retailer Axiom, according to reports.

The new licenses mark the biggest change in Saudi Arabia’s wireless industry since Zain Saudi launched operations in 2008. Virgin said it plans to begin operations in the first quarter of this year.
