Scotland: Aggregates merger gets Competition Commission referral

The buyout of some Aggregate Industries assets by Breedon Aggregates has been referred to the UK’s Competition Commission by the Office of Fair Trading, according to reports.

    In a statement, the OFT said the merger threatens “a substantial lessening of competition” in the aggregates, asphalt and concrete market in various geographical regions of Scotland.

    The acquisition of 11 aggregates quarries was made for nearly $55 million. Reports say the firms proposed concessions to quell competition concerns, but the remedies were not sufficient to the OFT, which therefor referred the case to the Commission.
