Senate’s antitrust subcommittee sets hearing date for Universal-EMI deal

The U.S. Senate’s antitrust subcommittee has set a hearing date of June 21 to consider Universal’s bid on EMI’s recorded music business. The European Commission is reportedly in the middle of drawing up its statement of objections on the transaction. The acquisition of EMI’s catalog, which boasts musical acts such as the Beatles and Pink Floyd, would give Universal a 40 percent market share. The result, some say, is higher prices for CDs and mp3s.
