A Sony consortium has filed a merger application with the European Commission, seeking EU approval for its acquisition of EMI’s publishing unit. The Sony group includes David Geffen, Blackstone Group, and the Mubadala Development Company. The $2.2 billion deal will give the Sony group control of EMI’s publishing rights, creating the world’s second-biggest music catalog.

The European Commission’s initial deadline for a decision is set for April 2.
