South Africa: Dawn raids crack down on margarine cartel

South African competition regulators have conducted dawn raids at local margarine company offices, according to reports, as the Competition Commission continues its investigation into allegations of price-fixing within the industry.

The local units of Malaysia’s Sime Darby and the UK’s Unilever were searched Thursday, the Commission said, noting that the raids will allow the regulator to determine whether the companies “engaged in collusive conduct.”

The firms said they are cooperating fully with the investigation.
