South Africa: Food union supports poultry probe

South Africa’s Food and Allied Workers’ Union announced its support of the Competition Commission’s proposal to investigate the nation’s poultry sector, said reports. The union, also known as Fawu, said it is looking forward to the Commission’s review, which was announced last Friday, regarding the effect of poultry imports on the sector’s employment. According to reports, less expensive chicken imports have harmed local employment rates and the ability for local poultry farms to adequately compete. The union said it hopes regulators will implement stricter tariffs on poultry imports from the EU and Brazil.
