South Africa: Tribunal trumps Commission, approves hospital merger

An unconditional approval of Life Healthcare and Joint Medical Holdings has been granted by the Competition Tribunal for the companies who own private South African hospitals. The Competition Commission had previously asked the Tribunal to prohibit the merger, citing competition concerns. The Tribunal’s biggest concern, according to reports, was in regards to whether Joint Medical Holdings’ pricing of medical schemes would increase after the merger, but ultimately found the deal does not pose a threat to competition.
